Introduction |

Hello, welcome to Eco–Construct
Awareness digital storytelling on the impact of building and construction on
climate change. Today, we will explore how our choices
in the construction industry can shape the future of our planet. |

Did you know that the building and
construction industry is responsible for a significant portion of global
greenhouse gas emissions? Worldwide the construction industry
generates about half of all carbon emissions and in the United States, about
40 percent. (Surety Bond Professionals, 2022). Building and construction require a vast
amount of resources such as timber and land. Deforestation for construction materials
leads to habitat destruction, and loss of diversity and contributes to
climate change. |

The construction process itself is energy–intensive.
According to the Energy Performance of Building Certificates (EPC) records, the
energy-efficient property is a building using a grade A+ to rating scale (or
A to G rating scale in the case of a building that is a dwelling). Where A+
is the most efficient and G is the least efficient. From extracting raw materials to
manufacturing building components, greenhouse gas emissions are released,
further exacerbating climate change. Building activities also contribute to
the exploitation of natural resources like sand mining and deforestation. |

However, there is hope. Architects and engineers are designing energy–efficient
and sustainable buildings that reduce carbon emissions. These buildings use
renewable energy sources, efficient insulation, and smart technologies to
minimize their impact on the environment. |

Green infrastructure, such as green
roofs and vertical gardens can mitigate the effect of climate change by
reducing the urban heat island effect, improving air quality, and providing
habitats for wildlife. Let us work together to build a greener
future. By making conscious choices in the building and construction
industry, we can mitigate the impact of building and construction on climate
change. |

It is not just about the buildings
themselves, it is about the people. Communities must come together to promote
sustainable practice, advocate for green building certification, and
encourage the use of locally sourced materials. Advocate for green building certificates
and encourage the use of locally sourced materials. Thank You |
